As usual we were given three classes to observe, and as for today, we were assigned to visit 3 of the Grade 4 classes; 4-3, 4-4 and 4-5. As the observation only began at 09:45 (the third period), I took the liberty of the free period to update my post and get myself ready for the observation. Well, before we went to the classes, we stopped at the principal's, vice principal's and our mentor's class to pass them apples in conjunction of Chuseok holiday. In case you are wondering, Chuseok is best understood as the Korean's Thanksgiving.
Anyway, from today's observation, I noticed that, their classrooms are very much similar to us. The teachers varied their strategies from a whole class activity and then paired/group work which slowly shifted to an individual work. All these within 40 minutes per period. The only thing that stood out the most to me in one of the classes was dental kit. I realised that the pupils here are required to brush their teeth after meal (their lunch). Weirdly enough, I didn't see them brushing their teeth anywhere around the school. Perhaps they did it in the bathroom. Still, there's no congestion or whatsoever at that time. I guess, these kids are really good at managing their time.
The classrooms are also equipped with a basket for them to store their umbrellas, and Koreans are very particular about weather and better still their weather forecast is almost precise too! Besides that. the homeroom teachers also ensure that there are different 'bins' for the pupils to handle their waste. No wonder recycling is very big here in South Korea. Everyone has been disciplined into doing it from the early age.
As the education system in Korea is aiming to make their kids happy, the lessons as well as the classroom management style is always directed to tackle this aim. For example, in Korean lesson today, the teacher asked the pupils to pinpoint to their feelings at the moment and not long after that, they were asked to share their feelings with everyone. To our suprise, one of the girl in the class shared how happy she was to have us in their school. Honestly, I don't know what we have done eto make her feel that way since we barely spoke to anyone of them yet.😅😅
To sum up, here are some things that I like from today's observation:
1. The compulsory reading record - Each classes are given list of books and together with the list, there are numbers from 1 - 26, indicating the pupils' numbers in class. Once they're done with the reading, a sticker will be placed on their number.
2. Compliment notes - To avoid tensions or fights among the pupils, one of the homeroom teacher placed series of memos on the softboard. and each pupils need to write compliments dedicating to their friends.
3. Name roulette - Since their classrooms are equipped with TV, it is a lot easier to show things to the pupils at once. This includes random namecalling as well. Functioning just like wheel of fortune, the homeroom teacher spun the roulette and a pupil's name will be randomly chosen. Once thair names are chose, the pupils have to stand up and summarise what he/she has learnt for that particular lesson.
and yeah,
they DON'T HAVE special student bodies such as "Pengawas Sekolah, Pengawas Pusat Sumber, Pembimbing Rakan Sebaya and Pengawas Pusat Sumber". In facet, there is specific appointment for the school librarians among the parents or outsiders.
