Of Farewell

3 months had flown by so quickly. I felt like it was only last week that I was posted here. It's finally time to leave and go back to where I belong. Thank you Sahwa Elementary for being nice to me. And thank you MOE, KME, UNESCO and APCEIU for this once in a lifetime opportunity. No doubt that I'll miss my 89 days here. There are so much that I didn't get to do but it is nothing compared to what I've gained. Once again, from the bottom of my heart, 고맙습니다 # komtep2019

Of Final Message and School's slippers

Since today we weren't that busy at all, we decided to stay around during lunch and asked some of the kids to write any messages to us or to Malaysia on a piece of Mahjong paper. As usual, since there were two of us and there are a number of school's lobby, so we places ourselves at the 3rd and the 4th floor. At first the kids were a bit shy to do it, but once I told them that we're leaving tomorrow, they immediately grabbed the marker  pens and started to write something. Some even asked if they could write in Hangeul, so I told them that it's fine. You can expect now that I can't read any of the messages  🤣 😭 😭  But it's okay, at least I could see their eagerness of giving us messages to remember them by. And as for the slippers, I just found out a few weeks ago that the letters on the slippers means, "Sahwa Elementary School".  😅 😅  See, you could see that my progress is rather slow, Just when I'm about to get the hang of it, It's a

Of Autograph

Today, when we entered the first class of our last First Graders, I literally had a heart attack! The kids had sooooo much sugar in their system  😭 😭  And I thought that it would be just the same with the other two classes. Luckily things only got better and better. The second class was great but the third class for the day was even better. Just like they said, "End it with a bang!" We, literally felt like an idol signing up authographs for the kids. It all started with one girl. She came and asked for my autograph at first, but I didn't understand it. And then, he went to my partner and only then I understood her  😅 😅 😅 And the dominos chain reaction started there and then  🤣 🤣 🤣   # komtep2019

Of Scissors

Today was our second last day at school. So, in the morning, as I walked passed by the Sixth Graders classes, I asked them to write messages to us or Malaysia in general. And then, around 12-ish, one of the boy, who was quiet close to me gave me his card and left. Then, he came back, but with a pair of scissors this time. And then he gave me the scissors, with my name written on it (misspelled). I thought of why he gave me such present and then he said, "Think of my name when you see this". His English name is Caesar, but I kept making fun of him by calling him Scissors. Hence he gave me a pair of scissors to remember him by  😅 😅   # komtep2019

Of Rock, Paper, Scissors

"가위 바위 보"! (가위 = scissors, 바위 = rock, 보 = paper) Growing up, I often used "Lat Ta Li Lat" instead of rock, paper, scissors. The Koreans however, have their own similar version of rock, paper, scissors commonly known as 가위 바위 보 or KAI BAI BO (pronounced as KAWI BAWI PO). The game is very simple. The players would turn their hands into a ball while chanting: "Kai, bai, bo!". Then, they'd put their hands out at exactly the same time in one of three signs: Kai (scissors), Bai (rock), Bo (paper). To choose "scissors", you put out the thumb and pointer finger imitating scissors. You make a fist for "rock". You put out a flat hand horizontal to the ground for "paper". So basically, - Rock (bai) beats Scissors (kai) - Scissors (kai) beats Paper (bo) - Paper (bo) beats Rock (bai) If both kids put out their hand as the same object, they have to replay the round. Whoever wins 2 out of 3 rounds wins. I remembe

Of Pokemon Go

Seeing the kids playing Pokemon Go kinda made me miss being a kid. And yes, I hate the feelings of leaving too. Especially when I know there's no coming back  😭 😭 😭 😭

Of Jambu Air and Paprika

So, this week is our second class with the First graders at Sahwa Elementary. Since we've taught them numbers in the first lesson, we decided to introduce them to local Malaysian fruits for the second lesson. So we had all these fruits that we think they might never heard of; belimbing, langsat, betik, durian (of course!) and jambu air. What surprised me was that, the moment we showed the picture of jambu air (also known as rose apple), one of them im mediately shouted, "Paprika!". See, that's how knowledge differs from each person. I don't think most kids would know what's paprika, but it didn't seem the case with this boy. So, I assumed he stumbled upon paprika in his past experience which made him think that way. Regardless, our aim was somehow achieved. At least now, he knows that there's a paprika doppelgänger amongst the fruits category  😅 # komtep2019stories

Of Note Taking

When we entered the upper grade kids, I rarely noticed them taking notes of our lesson. Perhaps they have super memory that works miraculously  🤔  By the way, things changed once we moved to the lower grades classes, especially the Third and Second graders. I noticed a few kids jotting down notes whever we got to their classes and more surprisingly some of them took it up the notch by decorating their notes with colours and illustrations. These two are the samples of the kids' handwritten notes during our lesson on numbers. # komtep2019

Of Class/Roles Assignment

As I mentioned before, the teachers' roles are very much depending on the admins' decision. So there is no exact rule of determining what role you'll get for the following year. Take this one teacher, for an example. In 2018, she was appointed as one of the English teacher at the school, however, for 2019, she had to be one of the 6th graders' homeroom teacher. So she had to teach ALL of the subjects offered to the Grade 6, EXCEPT English, PE and Sci ence. Another scenario involved another teacher who was once the Third Grader teacher, but now she is appointed to be the homeroom teacher for the fifth grader. Besides that, even though you're a subject teacher, school's nurse, the school's librarian or even the vice principal, you would still be assigned to be part of any grades. Eventhough you aren't teaching them, you would still be involved with the decision making for anything involving that particular grades. As for other roles, just like our sy

Of Relief Teacher (Second post)

As I shared before, most of the time, the teachers from any grades will be asked to relief classes for any of the absent homeroom teachers. However, in case of long term break, the school will appoint outsiders to temporarily fill in the class. In this picture, the actual homeroom teacher left the substitute teacher with a simple instructions in how things are in her class. # komtep2019

Of Morning Duty

You see, every morning, there will be teachers on duty at the traffic light nearby the school. And today, I saw the principal with the yellow flag-signalling when to cross the road  # komtep2019

Of Skype

Today, we had a brief Skype session between 5-4 class of Sahwa Elementary school and the SK Putarajaya Presint 14(1) Aerodancers team. The session went so smooth! I loved the effort by my kids back in 14(1). They put on a kpop dance cover by Blackpink - Let's Kill This Love and guessed what? The Korean kids were loving it  😍 😍 😍  They were also surprised to see the beetle brought by the boys too since they never seen such beetle in the area. So well done, kids  👍🏻 👍🏻  Thank you, sister  Najlaa Fatin  and Mr Nizam for handling it well on the other end. My Korean mentor teacher kept complimenting the program and she was hoping for another sessions too! Perhaps this is the new beginning of relationship between 14(1) and Sahwa? Who knows  # komtep2019

Of New Monday

Every Monday, all of the teachers in Sahwa Elementary school will receive a message by the Head teachers. The message would be a simple notification on what's going to happen throughout the week.  # komtep2019  As for today, we received this message:

Of 회장 Huwei Jang

If I remember correctly, this means VICE. So, in this school, I was told that there are 4 special pupils out of all grades. They are what commonly known as school prefect back in our school. However, they dressed up no differently than the rest of the kids. So I still wonder what do they actually do  🤔 I asked around a few times regarding this, but I didn't quite a good answer just yet. So let me snoop around for a bit more and give you guys the updates later, okay  👍🏻 👍🏻   # komtep2019

Of Special Needs

여보세요 Today's sharing is about the special needs pupils. Just like classrooms in Malaysia, Sahwa Elementary also have mixed abilities classrooms. There's no streaming at all; including the inclusion of special needs pupils in normal classrooms. Almost in all grades, there will be a special need pupils at least one in each of the classes especially in the lower grades classes. So, will they be able to keep up with the rest? Well, just like Einstein once said,  you cannot get a fish to climb a tree just to prove its intelligence (something along that line 😅 ). So the case is the same here as well. These group of special needs pupils will join most of the classes activities, however there will be a period or two during the day which requires them to go to the special class. Just like our remedial or special needs classes  👍🏻 👍🏻 👍🏻 By the way, today, we went into three of the remaining second grade classes and we taught them how to play 'Nenek, nenek si bongkok

Of Teacher's Day Celebration

Do you know that there's no official Teachers' Day celebration here in Sahwa Elementary? Sometime in the past, the school teachers can have any sorts of presents from their students. However, these days, due to some issues, teachers are not allowed to take any gifts from the students which are worth more than 5,000krw. Even so, the students are free to express their gratitude to their teachers by writing them special cards or even giving them presents below 5,000krw.  # komtep2019

Of 11.11

Today's a big shopping spree for most people especially the ones in Malaysia and China. However, things are a little bit spicy up here as today marks the special unofficial celebration called "The Peppero Day". Quite similar to Valentine's Day, this day involves gifting or exchanging Pepero snacks, a line of chocolate-dipped cookie to show affection for friends and loved ones. Some says that one must eat 11 packets of Pepero on November 11, 11:11am and 11:11pm at 11 seconds exactly just to be thin (as thin as the peppero sticks!  😱 ). As for Lotte, however, they have successfully promote Pepero Day from 1997 'till now which eventually led to other companies creating similarly shaped snacks to participate on Pepero Day.  # komtep2019

Of APCEIU Reports

어떻게 지내? Hi everyone! Have I told you anything about APCEIU reporting? By the way, besides going to classes and executing our project plan, each and every teacher from Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam who joined this program are required to prepare a number of reports; Biweekly reports (which needs to be submitted once, every two weeks) Final lesson plan report (to be submitted the week before the final week at school) Final project plan report  (to be submitted the week before the final week at school) The biweekly reports were the compilation of everything that has been done for two weeks in just two pages. Besides that, one must also state the plan for the coming two weeks in this biweekly report.  Final lesson plan report, however, was a report based on one of the lessons carried out throughout our stay at the host school. For this part, teachers are required to carry out a survey with the pupils based on the templates given by APCEIU. There are two

Of Mid term Review

18th October 2019 We had our first presentation for the APCEIU. Just so you know, we were not evaluated for the presentation. It was all about sharing of our experiences at our host school. Each team was given about 6 - 8 minutes to present. Since there were 3 concurrent sessions, all of the contingents was assigned to three different rooms. As for us, we were the Malaysian team in that session and we were the second presenters. Nervous? Of course, how can I not be, right? But, a little bit of nervousness is good to boost up our confidence, at least that's what I was told 😅😅 The contents of our presentation are as at the images attached. You may also clicked this hyperlink ( Mid Review ) to view our short yet meaningful video of our stay in Sahwa Elementary for the first 2 months 😆😆😆

Of Malaysia Exhibition

The plan was simple; Divide and Conquer But, the plan was backfired. Hey guys. In this post, I would love to share with you on our Malaysia Exhibition Day which was held last Friday, 15th November 2019. Honestly, it may look a little bit of a chaos, but it was indeed a success regardless lack of manpower 😛😛😛  Since there were only two of us, we thought of making it as simple as possible. luckily, our school does have a strict policy on cooking. So, we omitted the intial plan of cooking local cuisines, but we did give them MILO drinks and tidbitds like Kuih Cincin, Amplang and Dodol.  After we talked to our mentor, we decided to have 2 venues to avoid the event being too crowded. Then, we came up with the following tentative: --> Time slots Activities Execution 09:00a.m. – 09:50a.m. Sarawak beads – bracelet making -         Limited to 10 earliest pupils -         Venue: 4 th floor lobby -
