안녕하세요!
Each countries have different ways of 'getting' teachers in their country. For the South Koreans, if they wish to become an elementary school teacher, they have to enrol themselves at any one of the five education universities in the country. I was told that two of them are situated in Jinju and Busan.
Even so, to become one is like tying themselves to an absolute destiny as there's no turning back or shifting midway. This is because each education universities differ according to the levels (either as elementary school, middle school, high school or even university level).
For inspiring South Korean elementary teachers, they have to spend their first two years learning about ALL of the subjects offered in elementary schools (Korean, Arts, Music, Social Studies, Mathematics, Moral). And then, in their last two years of study, they will choose their major. Some would opt for English, Science or even Physical Education. To me, this way makes more sense as they do have homeroom and subject teachers at school and the principal is the one who will assign them to either one of the roles. So, the university is basically preparing them for both roles.
Once they are done with the 4 years of studying, the teachers would sit for an English test, attend an interview as well as a teaching demonstration. Surprisingly, they will only get their posting once they passed all of the stages. One of the teacher here told me that he had to take the English test twice before he finally secured his first posting 😱
When it comes to redeployment, the teachers with 5 years of service at a school would be transfered to another school within the area. Simply put, their 'lifespan' at each school is only 5 years.
